I'm looking for housing in the Chicago area and was wondering how easy it is to find housing? Do they run background checks and deny with my criminal background?

Yes, housing does run background checks and will deny with a criminal background. Some places will allow a criminal background depending on what the crime was and the length of time. It's tough out here.

Network amongst friends, family ect to find out which apartments etc. are willing to rent/lease to ex'-offenders

I rented from a private individual and he didn't do a background check at all. I know a few felons who rented from private people. When they mentioned a background check, the guys started counting cash out in front of the person. That works sometimes, but I wouldn't count on it.
